Bishop makes pastoral visit to Saint Anthony

Bishop MansourHis Excellency Bishop Gregory Mansour made his first pastoral visit to Saint Anthony’s Church in Glen Allen, Virginia on the weekend of December 9th through the 11th, 2005. Not only was it an opportunity for the Bishop to get reacquainted with a parish with which he had spent some time as a seminarian, but it was also an opportunity to participate in St. Anthony’s Annual Benefit Dinner for Lebanese orphans.

Bishop Gregory arrived on Friday and was greeted by Monsignor George Sebaali and representatives from a variety of church organizations. In the evening Msgr. Sebaali hosted a dinner reception for the Bishop with the various organizations of the Parish. Following the dinner Bishop Mansour addressed the crowd and confirmed them in their ministry and sacrifices to the parish. He also took time to answer questions presented to him from the representatives.

On Saturday morning, Bishop Mansour celebrated liturgy with members of the Maronite Youth Organization and their families. After the liturgy, the youth had a private meeting with the Bishop. They presented to the Bishop their mission statement and goals and a scrapbook of the various ministries of Saint Anthony’s. The scrapbook also included pictures of the Bishop as a seminarian at St. Anthony’s, photos of the children in the Maronite Formation Program, the youth clubs and their activities, and pictures from the annual Lebanese Food Festival. The Bishop spent some time with the youth in a question and answer period.

In the afternoon, Bishop Mansour accompanied Monsignor George Sebaali in visiting sick members of the parish. There was an open house at the rectory later for parishioners who wished to visit with the Bishop. The evening festivities included a prayer service in the church during which Bishop Mansour, Msgr. Sebaali and Fr. Al-Chouefati heard confessions. Following the prayer service St. Anthony’s parish held its Annual Benefit Dinner in the social hall. The Lebanese dinner cooked by the Ladies Auxiliary, was the second phase of the church’s annual charitable drive to benefit orphaned children in Lebanon.  Fatherr Kamil Al-Chouefati, Parochial Vicar, gave the blessing at the dinner.  Monsignor George Sebaali thanked the bishop for his visit and support and presented him with a check for $13,600 for the orphans.

On Sunday, Bishop Gregory met with over 170 children who are enrolled in the Maronite Formation program. The children asked him a variety of questions ranging from how much a Bishop makes a year to why women can not be priests. Later, he celebrated liturgy with the parishioners who filled the church. During the liturgy, 24 of the parish youth participated in the Commitment to Christian Life, a program which invites high school students to an ongoing and life-long deepening of their relationship with Jesus and the Church. The Bishop presented them with Bibles that he signed. A reception was held after the liturgy in honor of the Bishop. The members of Saint Anthony’s Church were eager to meet him and look forward to a continuing relationship with their Bishop.
